Microformats
When a website uses microformats it means that the information is encoded in a certain way that the machines can understand, in order to provide users with additional functionalities.
For example, the text "Paseo de la Castellana 162" refers to an address, but the machine will not understand this unless it is told that it is an address. Using microformats makes it possible to have machines recognise this text as an address and, therefore, to use this information, for example, to display a link to a map, which simplifies the search for the user.
How can I use microformats?
First of all, you will need to install a plug-in, that is, a small additional program, in your browser.
-
Mozilla Firefox : plug-in Operator .
-
Safari for Mac : plug-in Safari Microformats .
-
Intenet Explorer : At this moment we know of no plug-in for this browser, but future versions will have integrated microformat applications.
-
Opera : At this moment we know of no plug-in for this browser, but future versions will have integrated microformat applications.
For demonstration purposes we will use the Operator plug-in for Mozilla Firefox, however, its operation is similar to that of other plug-ins. Once installed, a new toolbar will appear.
Buttons that can be used will be activated on pages that use microformats. Using the button "Options" you can set up the buttons you wish to be displayed. The most commonly used are described below:
-
Addresses : for example, the address of Ministry's headquarters in Madrid. Clicking the button offers the possibility of finding its location on a map.
-
Contacts : contacts that can subsequently be exported to a contacts book, for example in Outlook.
-
Events : important events and dates, which can be added to a personal diary, such as in Outlook or Google Calendar.
-
Locations : locations of places on maps by geographic co-ordinates.
As you browse the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism´s website, different buttons will be activated. As far as possible, we have endeavoured to simplify these "small tasks", such a locating addresses on maps or adding important dates to your calendar.
